As the year is coming to an end, we take the time to reflect on the excellent fall weather we have occurred at Powerline. We find ourselves thankful for many things this year, but this truly would not be possible without the dedication of our multipliers to continue delivering quality genetics with a love for the beef industry.
Since our last Powerline Multiplier Meeting in October meeting Jerry Thompson and hearing from Matt Cleveland, the team at Powerline Genetics has truly been amazed with the progress of the bulls in Arapahoe. The following week, within two and half days, Dan, JD, and Stephanie processed all the Spring 2016 born bull at the yard. During this time, second DNA samples was taken, wormed, poured, Lactipro, and Powerline yellow ear tags. Additionally, an “On test” weight was collected at that time which you will see on your print out of EPDs.
Currently, we are on our third group of GrowSafe bulls coming off test right after Christmas. Growth, Carcass, and Efficiency is displayed on the scale while running these bulls across the scale collecting weights of 900 to 1000 pounds. Our last GrowSafe trial bulls expressed intakes of 35 to 47 pounds of intake on average daily.
November 7-9 Dan and Stephanie traveled to Laramie, Wyoming to check on our Wyoming group of bulls there for the duration to be PAP tested and brought back to Arapahoe. These bulls were brought to the University by Alan Hogg (Wyoming) and Carl Ellsworth (Idaho). After walking through the bulls and discovering about eight bulls with clipped heads and cleaned up. We were later told the student at the University are taking advantage of some quality ABS sired sons for their annual 4-H Judging Competitions held annually.
Starting the last week of November, the Powerline bull barn was the place to be! With absolutely great weather and 93.1 The River coming in loud and clear, JD and Stephanie spent most of their week freeze branding all the bulls in Arapahoe. This allowed us the opportunity to sort through the bulls penning for each upcoming sale and making our decisions on culls. Good data and sound cattle make the gate cute every time!
Moving along, Dan traveled to HyPlains Feedyard first week of December where we currently have 44 Multiplier bulls started on GrowSafe end of November. After walking through this pen of bulls, there was lots of positive feedback on the development at HyPlains. With slightly cooler temperatures and wind chills of negative twenty below, Stephanie took off for Laramie, Wyoming that same week to meet with Margi White, DVM of Fort Bridger, Wyoming to collect PAP test on 84 bulls. While in Laramie, two agriculture students assisted in freeze branding the bulls at the university. One student from California on the collegiate judging team whom has been to Arapahoe in the past to evaluate and walk through the bulls with the judging team and the other from a Power Genetics feedyard setting.
Rolling into the middle of December, Matt Reints and his team are clipping and torching bulls for the first McCook sale in February. Additionally, Becky Rennert with DV Auction will be videoing these bulls December 27-30. Fingers crossed on great weather and clear skies! If you are around the yard during that time, please feel free to stop in and offer a hand. As we ring in the New Year, Matt Lane will be in Arapahoe the first week of January to collect scan data and ultrasound the bulls. We will be collecting yearling weights on all these bulls as well as scrotal measurements excluding the Wyoming bulls which just arrived at the yard.
We are looking forward to our Spring 2017 sale season and wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and Happy New Years!
